Kennedy Agyapong and other contenders face an uphill task if they are to catch up with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, according to the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah.
Latest tracking polls put Dr. Bawumia ahead with 57% support among voters, while Kennedy Agyapong follows with 29%. Other aspirants, including Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Kwabena Agyapong, trail with single-digit support.
Among NPP delegates, Dr. Bawumia maintains a strong lead with 47% support compared to Kennedy Agyapong's 17%, though a significant number of delegates remain undecided. In a potential runoff, Dr. Bawumia's lead widens further, securing 62% against Agyapong's 38%.
Speaking on Citi FM's Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, Dankwah said that while the race is not yet over, Dr. Bawumia's advantage will be difficult to overturn.
"It is still not over. I won't say it is over but if you look at where the leading candidate is, it is highly unlikely that every undecided voter will go to one candidate," he noted.
He explained that Global InfoAnalytics has analysed undecided voters' preferences but has withheld releasing that data for now.
"We believe that Kennedy has to do a lot more to bring Dr. Bawumia down or his other competitors should do a lot more in order to drag Dr. Bawumia from where he is," he said.
Dankwah added that unless there are major shifts, forcing a runoff will be difficult. The substantial gap between the frontrunner and his closest challenger suggests that Dr. Bawumia is well-positioned to secure the NPP's presidential nomination, though the pollster cautioned that political dynamics can still change before the final vote.
The NPP flagbearer will lead the party into future elections, making this internal contest crucial for the party's political fortunes. Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President, enters the race with significant name recognition and established party networks, while Kennedy Agyapong brings a populist appeal and strong business background to his campaign.
