Bawumia’s Victory Has Changed Ghana’s Political Equation – Koku Anyidoho
February 2,2026
Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has stated that the election of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has significantly altered Ghana’s political landscape.
According to him, since Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the NPP presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, the political equation in the country has changed.
Anyidoho noted that for the first time in Ghana’s democratic history, an opposition party has elected its presidential candidate as early as three years before the next general election.
“Dr. Bawumia is not only the Flagbearer of NPP, he has also been Vice President for eight years. In December 2024, he was conceding defeat; today, victory has walked his way,” he wrote on X.
He extended his congratulations to Dr. Bawumia and the NPP, expressing hope that Ghana’s democracy would continue to grow stronger.
“Sincerely wish Dr. Bawumia well on this new journey of his and may Ghana’s democracy grow from strength to strength,” he added.
Some critics argue that his statement, though congratulatory, may carry undertones of bitterness due to his controversial political history.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again been entrusted with leading the Dankwah-Dombo tradition into the December 7, 2028 presidential election.
He secured a decisive victory with 100,120 votes, representing 56.39% of the total votes cast.
His closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, obtained 41,856 votes, representing 23.57%.
Other aspirants recorded lower results, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong receiving 32,985 votes (18.58%), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum polling 1,676 votes (0.94%), and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong securing 375 votes (0.21%).
The outcome has sparked renewed political discussions as Ghana gradually heads toward the 2028 general elections.
