ACT for Water Initiative: Green Earth Action Foundation Brings Global Freshwater and Marine Clean-up Campaign to Ghana

Kormantse, Ghana || The Green Earth Action Foundation (GEAF) has successfully conducted a major beach clean-up exercise at Kormantse Beach in Ghana's Central Region as part of its ACT for Water Initiative – ACT II Freshwater and Marine Clean-up Series, a global environmental campaign coordinated by the Switzerland-based non-governmental organization.
The initiative brought together volunteers, community members, and environmental advocates to remove waste from the coastline while raising awareness of the need to protect freshwater and marine ecosystems. The Ghana event forms part of a broader international campaign being implemented simultaneously in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Switzerland.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Shaibu Bukari urged coastal communities to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, stressing that plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of fishing communities.
"The marine environment is home to fish and many other aquatic species. When waste, particularly plastics, is dumped into the sea, it destroys their habitat. Many of the surviving fish move into deeper waters, making them more difficult to catch. Since the sea is a major source of food and income for many families, protecting it is essential for our survival and economic well-being," Dr. Bukari said.
Dr. Bukari called on the public to play an active role in safeguarding Ghana's beaches by reducing plastic pollution and supporting community-led environmental conservation initiatives.
Speaking during the event, Christopher Benyah, a GEAF Ambassador and the coordinator of the initiative in Ghana, described the ACT for Water Initiative as one of the Green Earth Action Foundation's flagship global programmes dedicated to protecting water resources and promoting environmental sustainability.
"ACT for Water is a flagship initiative of the Green Earth Action Foundation. This global campaign is being implemented in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Switzerland with the shared objective of protecting freshwater and marine ecosystems. GEAF continues to champion forward-looking environmental initiatives that contribute directly to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water)," Mr. Benyah said.
Highlighting the success of the Ghana event, Mr. Benyah said the exercise demonstrated the power of community participation in tackling environmental pollution.
"With the support of 16 dedicated volunteers, we mobilised about 120 participants, including the Chief of Kormantse and other community stakeholders, for this clean-up exercise. Together, we collected approximately 30 tonnes of waste from Kormantse Beach. This remarkable achievement shows what communities can accomplish when they unite behind a common environmental cause. We hope this initiative inspires sustained action to keep our beaches clean and protect our freshwater and marine ecosystems for future generations."
Mr. Benyah expressed appreciation to the Green Earth Action Foundation for sponsoring the initiative and to all volunteers, traditional authorities, local partners, and community members whose contributions made the programme a success.
The ACT for Water Initiative is one of several international programmes through which the Green Earth Action Foundation promotes sustainable environmental management and encourages collective action to preserve ecosystems for future generations.
The Kormantse Beach clean-up was fully sponsored by the Green Earth Action Foundation (GEAF) and implemented in Ghana by Smarteco Global Project, acting as GEAF's independent implementing contractor.
