NPP Flagbearer Hopefuls Commit to Peaceful January 31 Primaries

January 22, 2026

All five presidential aspirants contesting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership have formally committed themselves to a peaceful and unified primary process by signing a peace pact ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026, elections.

The agreement binds the aspirants to conduct their campaigns with decorum, respect party rules, and accept the outcome of the primaries as a true reflection of the will of delegates.

Those who signed the pact are former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education; and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary.

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is contesting the party’s presidential nomination for the third time, following previous attempts in 2007 and 2023. Kennedy Agyapong is making his second bid after finishing second in the 2023 primaries. Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, is also seeking a second mandate as flagbearer, having won the last primary. Dr. Acheampong and Dr. Adutwum are contesting the flagbearership for the first time.

Speaking at the ceremony, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the peace pact reflects the party’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and internal cohesion.

According to him, the agreement obliges all candidates to participate fully in the process, uphold party unity, and support the eventual flagbearer in the 2028 general elections, including efforts to secure a strong parliamentary majority.

The pact further requires the aspirants to avoid inflammatory language or actions that could destabilise the party before, during, or after the primaries. Any disputes arising from breaches of the agreement will be resolved through the NPP’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms in accordance with the party’s constitution.
