Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has thrown his support behind Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer contest, arguing that the Assin Central MP carries less political baggage than former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on TV monitored by vistanewsgh.com on Saturday, January 31, Kpebu said that if he were an NPP delegate, his vote would go to Kennedy Agyapong.
“I would choose Kennedy Agyapong over Dr Bawumia because it’s better to select someone who literally insults everybody in Ghana than someone who has presided over the collapse of the Ghanaian economy,” he stated.
However, another private legal practitioner, Kofi Bentil, disagreed, describing Dr Bawumia as the most credible and experienced candidate among the aspirants.
According to Bentil, Dr Bawumia remains the best option for the NPP due to his long-standing exposure to public scrutiny and leadership.
“Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the best case scenario for the NPP at this time. He has been tried and tested, and the others come nowhere close after the level of scrutiny he has endured over the last two decades,” Bentil said.
Bentil also noted that Dr Bawumia had opposed several controversial government policies in the past, including the now-infamous Electronic Levy (E-Levy).
Meanwhile, pollster Mussa Dankwah projected a decisive victory for Dr Bawumia, predicting that the former Vice President would win in 14 out of the 16 regions, losing only the Central and Volta Regions.
“Bawumia is winning 14 out of the 16 regions,” Dankwah said, adding that the contest would not go into a second round.
Dankwah further stated that Dr Bawumia would secure more than the required 50 percent plus one vote, thereby clinching the flagbearer position outright.
Contrary to this projection, Dr Evans Duah, a researcher and financial economist, said there was a strong possibility of a runoff.
“A runoff is possible,” Dr Duah said, though he added that Kennedy Agyapong could pull off a first-round victory if voter turnout favours him.“If anyone is crossing the 50 plus one mark, it’s Kennedy Agyapong,” he stressed.
The New Patriotic Party is conducting its presidential primary today, with over 211,000 delegates voting nationwide to elect a flagbearer for the December 7, 2028 general election.
The candidates in the race are Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
As voting continues, the contest is widely seen as crucial, as the eventual winner will lead the NPP into the 2028 election against a yet-to-be-determined candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
While most opinion polls favour Dr Bawumia, others suggest a potential upset by Kennedy Agyapong. With ballots being cast across the country, the final outcome is expected to settle the intense debate surrounding the race by the close of day.
