Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has urged the international community to work together to safeguard the future of vulnerable children worldwide.
Speaking at the annual Prayer Service for Peace and Hope for Children at the opening of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Mrs. Mahama appealed for decisive leadership and collaborative efforts to build a peaceful world that nurtures young people and secures opportunities for their growth.
She expressed concern that children today face increasing uncertainty due to reduced global funding, mistrust in institutions, and ongoing humanitarian crises. Highlighting the plight of children in conflict zones, especially in Africa, she lamented that many are robbed of their childhood, forced into combat, and left with lifelong scars.
“These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control. When nations fail to focus on policies that safeguard the home, strengthen communities, and nurture the youth, it is our children who suffer the most,” she stressed.
The First Lady also drew attention to the work of the Lordina Foundation, her non-governmental organization, which has supported orphans and underprivileged children in Ghana. She expressed hope that similar initiatives across the globe would strengthen protection systems and give children a chance at a brighter future.
The prayer service was organized by World Vision International in collaboration with the World Council of Churches, Caritas Internationalis, the Episcopal Church, and other faith-based organizations.
