Court Remands Man Over False Assassination Claims Against President Mahama

January 26, 2026

The Adenta Circuit Court has remanded a 30-year-old laundry attendant into police custody for allegedly publishing false information aimed at causing public fear and panic.

The accused, Ahmed Hassan Abdul Razzaq, is said to have circulated a video on his TikTok account, @breakingnewsghana, claiming that two military officers were plotting to assassinate President John Dramani Mahama.

Razzaq was charged with publishing false news, but the court did not take his plea. Presiding over the case, the court ordered that he be remanded in police custody until February 9, 2026, when he is expected to reappear.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, told the court that the complainant in the case is the Ghana Police Service.

According to the facts presented, Razzaq allegedly posted the video on January 20, 2026, naming Sergeant Amoh and Sergeant Joseph as the officers involved in the purported assassination plot.

He was arrested the following day at Adjiringanor in the Greater Accra Region.

In his caution statement to investigators, Razzaq admitted to publishing the video but stated that he had never met the officers mentioned and did not know them personally. He claimed he came across an unverified social media post alleging the plot, which influenced his decision to publish the video.

However, police indicated that Razzaq was unable to identify or trace the original source of the alleged information.

The case has been adjourned to February 9, 2026, for further proceedings.
