OSP Interrogates Baba Jamal Over Alleged Inducement During NDC Ayawaso East Primary
February 10, 2026
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has questioned Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, in connection with alleged vote inducement during the party’s parliamentary primary held on February 7.
Officials at the OSP confirmed that the candidate was invited to assist investigators after petitions were submitted alleging that voters were influenced with material items during the internal election. The questioning, according to sources, is part of an initial fact-finding process and should not be interpreted as a determination of wrongdoing.
The complaints are linked to claims that various items, including television sets, boiled eggs, and other goods, were allegedly distributed to delegates in an attempt to sway voting decisions, potentially contravening Ghana’s electoral and anti-corruption laws.
Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that the probe also covers allegations of assault, obstruction of OSP personnel, and corruption-related offences arising from the incident.
Following hours of interrogation, Baba Jamal was granted bail on self-recognisance. The OSP has yet to issue an official statement outlining the precise allegations or stating whether charges will be pursued.
Baba Jamal has publicly rejected the accusations, insisting he did not engage in vote-buying and that his conduct throughout the primary complied with the rules governing internal party elections.
The incident has renewed public debate over vote inducement in internal party contests, with civil society groups and political observers calling for tougher enforcement of electoral regulations to preserve democratic accountability.
The OSP has reaffirmed its mandate to investigate all corruption-related complaints fairly and independently, irrespective of political affiliation.
