Mahama to Launch Free Primary Healthcare Programme Today
April 15,2026
President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially launch the government’s flagship Free Primary Healthcare Programme today, a major step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage in Ghana.
The initiative, a key component of the President’s social contract, will begin with a first phase targeting 150 underserved districts across the country within the next two months.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on April 13, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, outlined the scale of implementation. He revealed that over 350 container-based health service points will be set up in busy locations such as markets and lorry stations to improve access.
“This is governance with a human face,” the Minister noted, emphasizing that healthcare delivery will be taken directly to communities rather than waiting for patients to visit facilities.
To support the rollout, more than 24,500 pieces of essential medical equipment are being distributed nationwide to strengthen CHPS compounds and health centres.
The programme prioritizes preventive care, covering screenings for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cancers, alongside maternal care, immunisation, and treatment for common illnesses like malaria and respiratory infections. It also includes public health education on family planning, menstrual hygiene, and safe water practices.
A structured referral system has also been integrated, ensuring that complex cases are escalated to higher-level facilities while maintaining follow-up care at the community level.
The Free Primary Healthcare Programme is expected to significantly expand Ghana’s social protection framework and reinforce the government’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to all.
