Mahama Touts 24-Hour Economy Initiative at 80th UN General Assembly

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday told world leaders at the 80th United Nations General Assembly that Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative will transform the country’s economic outlook and restore hope among citizens.

Highlighting his government’s achievements since assuming office in January, President Mahama said Ghana has made significant progress in stabilizing the economy.

“When I took over the affairs of Ghana on January 7, 2025, our currency, the Ghana cedi, was rapidly depreciating. Inflation was rising, and citizens were weighed down by a huge debt burden and low morale,” he said.

He explained that his administration introduced what he calls a “reset agenda” to restructure Ghana’s economic foundation and improve competitiveness globally.

“In just eight months, we have achieved a significant reduction in inflation, from 23.8 percent in December 2024 to 11.5 percent in August 2025, restoring price stability for our citizens,” Mahama told the Assembly.

He added that the cedi has appreciated considerably against other currencies, with Bloomberg recently ranking it as the best-performing currency in the world.

Mahama further pointed to Ghana’s improved sovereign credit rating as evidence of growing investor confidence, saying the 24-Hour Economy Initiative is central to the country’s long-term growth.

“There is a renewed willingness among the people to trust that their elected officials have Ghana’s interests at heart and that we are progressing together,” he said.

The President’s address formed part of Ghana’s presentation at the annual UN gathering, where global leaders deliberate on peace, security, and sustainable development.
