Bawumia Accuses Mahama of Inconsistency Over Post-COVID Economic Crisis
September 25, 2025
New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful and 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as inconsistent positions on the causes of Ghana’s recent economic challenges.
Speaking to supporters during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP government had long explained that the economic downturn from 2022 was the result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war.
He argued that Mr. Mahama rejected this explanation during the 2024 elections, attributing the hardship to poor economic management, only to now acknowledge at the United Nations General Assembly in New York that the pandemic had indeed reversed years of poverty reduction across Africa.
“This shows he knew the truth, but he didn’t say the same during the election period,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The former Vice President insisted that unlike the NDC, the NPP had been transparent about the real causes of the crisis and expressed optimism that voters would reward the party in the 2028 general elections.
“By God’s grace, we will all see the truth, and I believe the NPP will be voted for in 2028 to bring economic development,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia is currently touring parts of the Eastern Region to consolidate grassroots support ahead of the next polls.
