President Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Fight Galamsey at Military Academy Graduation

January 1,2026

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, assuring Ghanaians that the battle will be pursued decisively without fear or favour.

The President made the remarks during the graduation ceremony of the Ghana Military Academy, where 261 officers from the Regular Career Course 64 and the Short Service Commission/Special Duties Course 62 were commissioned.

Speaking as the reviewing officer at the parade, President Mahama noted that although some progress has been made in curbing the illegal mining menace, his administration will not relent until the practice is effectively addressed.

He stressed that sustained and coordinated operations will continue to protect the country’s natural resources and safeguard water bodies from destruction.

The President also expressed deep concern about the rising threats of violent extremism and terrorism within the sub-region, particularly along Ghana’s northern borders. He emphasized that national security must be seen as a shared responsibility and not solely the duty of state security agencies.

Touching on military preparedness, President Mahama revealed that plans are far advanced to acquire new helicopters to enhance the Ghana Air Force’s air mobility and rapid response capabilities.

According to him, the acquisition forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces in responding to both internal and external security threats.

In total, 261 newly commissioned officers are expected to contribute to Ghana’s national security efforts and peacekeeping missions both locally and internationally.
