The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has commended the government for its intensified efforts in combating illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, stating that the menace has significantly reduced.
The paramount chief made these remarks during an engagement on Thursday, October 2, 2025, where he acknowledged the progress made in the fight against illegal mining activities that have devastated water bodies and forest reserves across the country.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, who is also a newly sworn-in Court of Appeal Judge, noted that government initiatives aimed at curbing the illegal mining menace have begun yielding positive results.
Ghana has been grappling with the galamsey crisis for years, with illegal mining operations polluting major water bodies, destroying farmlands, and degrading forest reserves. The environmental damage has raised serious concerns about the sustainability of water resources and the health implications for communities affected by contaminated water sources.
The government has implemented various measures including military deployments to mining sites, stricter enforcement of mining regulations, and prosecution of illegal miners to address the crisis.
The Dormaahene's comments carry significant weight given his dual role as both a traditional leader and a member of the judiciary. His position allows him unique insight into both the traditional governance structures in mining communities and the legal frameworks being employed to combat illegal mining.
The acknowledgment from such a respected traditional authority is seen as a boost to government efforts and may help encourage continued collaboration between traditional leaders, government agencies, and communities in the fight against illegal mining.
