Mahama Unveils High-Level Panel for Accra Reset Initiative
April 6,2026
President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has announced the formation of a high-level panel under the Accra Reset Initiative, a bold African-led effort aimed at reshaping global health governance and advancing economic sovereignty.
The announcement was made by the Chancery of the Accra Reset, which described the initiative as a transformative platform to reform the global health architecture. The newly constituted 18-member panel is tasked with developing concrete and actionable proposals to address longstanding structural imbalances in global health systems.
The panel will be co-chaired by four distinguished global health leaders: Peter Piot, El Hadj As Sy, Nísia Trindade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
According to officials, the panel’s mandate is to propose reforms to a global health system that has historically positioned countries in the Global South as passive participants rather than active decision-makers. The initiative seeks to reposition these countries as sovereign actors capable of shaping global health policies that directly affect their populations.
“This initiative represents a fundamental reimagining of how global health governance should function in the 21st century,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President.
To support its work, the panel will be guided by a High-Level Consultative Group comprising key global institutions, including the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, Global Fund, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, African Union Development Agency, and the International Finance Corporation.
Notable members of the panel include Muhammad Ali Pate, John Nkengasong, and Soumya Swaminathan.
In addition, Michel Sidibé has been appointed as Special Advisor to the High-Level Panel and Envoy to the Co-Chairs, bringing extensive experience in global health systems.
The High-Level Consultative Group also includes prominent global leaders such as Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, among others.
The Accra Reset Initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in redefining global health governance, ensuring a more inclusive, equitable, and sovereign-driven approach to health systems worldwide.
