From Injury Struggles to Ballon d’Or Glory: The Epic Redemption of Ousmane Dembélé

September 23, 2025

Ousmane Dembélé’s journey is one of resilience, pain, and ultimate triumph. Once written off as football’s great unfulfilled promise, the French winger has risen from years of injuries and setbacks to claim the most prestigious individual prize in the sport the Ballon d’Or.

On a glittering night at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the 28-year-old forward lifted the golden trophy, sealing his transformation from a Barcelona disappointment to the world’s best player and Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona Years: Promise and Pain

Signed by Barcelona in 2017 for €105 million, Dembélé was expected to be the face of a new era. Instead, he endured a turbulent six-year spell marred by 102 missed matches due to repeated injuries. Despite flashes of brilliance across 185 appearances, his inconsistency and constant fitness struggles turned him into a symbol of wasted potential.

In a candid reflection, he admitted: “It was complicated.” Those words capture years of frustration, as the pressure of being the club’s most expensive signing clashed with an unforgiving cycle of recovery and relapse.

Parisian Renaissance

A new chapter began in July 2023 when PSG brought him home to France. With the help of specialists and a new injury-prevention program, Dembélé finally turned his fitness around. “I changed a lot of things when it comes to injury prevention, and it’s paid off. Now, I feel really good physically,” he explained.

The results were immediate. Injury-free, confident, and consistent, Dembélé became the focal point of PSG’s attack, delivering world-class performances week after week.

The Golden Season

The 2024/25 campaign cemented his redemption arc. With 35 goals and 14 assists in 53 matches, Dembélé inspired PSG to their first-ever Champions League triumph, starring in the knockout stages and final against Inter Milan. His availability missing only a handful of games all season stood in stark contrast to his Barcelona struggles.

Redemption Realized

As the 67th recipient of the Ballon d’Or, Dembélé joins football’s most exclusive club. His journey stands as proof that perseverance, the right environment, and personal growth can unlock even the most fragile of talents.

“Thank you to all the clubs I’ve played for: Stade Rennes, Borussia Dortmund, and the club I always dreamed of playing for, Barcelona. I learned so much there, playing alongside players like Messi and Iniesta. It was a great learning experience. I am so happy,” he said in an emotional acceptance speech.

At 28, Dembélé appears to be entering his peak years. For the boy from Vernon, France, who dreamed of greatness, the Ballon d’Or is both vindication and inspiration a reminder that redemption is possible even when the world has given up.
