Cracks in Abura Asebu Kwamankese NPP Deeper Than National Party Divisions – Akokowura Tuntum
February 2,2026
Political commentator Akokowura Kwabena Tuntum has stirred intense debate within Ghana’s political space after asserting that internal divisions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese (AAK) Constituency are deeper than the cracks confronting the party at the national level.
In a social media post shared on Monday, Tuntum stated: “The cracks in AAK NPP is bigger than the cracks in the entire NPP. Time is pregnant.” The comment has attracted widespread attention among party faithful and political analysts, particularly in the Central Region.
Events unfolding within the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency appear to support Tuntum’s claim, as the constituency is currently engulfed in an intense internal power struggle involving former Constituency Chairman Kingsley Kakari Bondzie, incumbent Chairman Obed Quansah, and former Member of Parliament Elvis Morris Donkoh.
Sources within the party indicate that the tensions are largely driven by disagreements over control of the constituency party structure and have been compounded by open alignments with different presidential aspirants during the NPP’s just-ended presidential primaries.
Chairman Obed Quansah is reported to have supported Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, while former MP Elvis Morris Donkoh is said to have aligned himself with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Meanwhile, former chairman Kakari Bondzie is believed to have backed Bryan Acheampong, further deepening factional lines within the constituency.
Party insiders say the balance of power currently appears to favour Chairman Obed Quansah, who is said to enjoy the backing of a majority of constituency executives despite resistance from rival factions.
Tensions heightened after the presidential primaries, where the chairman’s preferred presidential candidate failed to win. In the aftermath, members aligned with the former MP are alleged to be working to weaken the chairman’s standing, with some executives reportedly championing calls for a vote of no confidence against him.
Supporters of Chairman Quansah have dismissed the alleged move as a politically motivated attempt to reclaim control of the constituency party, rather than a genuine response to leadership failures.
Political observers say the phrase “time is pregnant” suggests imminent developments that could further expose or escalate the internal rift, especially as the party undertakes reorganisation efforts ahead of future elections.

While constituency and regional party leadership are yet to publicly comment on the unfolding tensions, grassroots members fear that continued infighting could harm the party’s electoral fortunes if left unresolved.
