September 29, 2025 — The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong, a hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, has called for immediate disciplinary measures against two prominent regional party chairmen over controversial statements regarding the party's upcoming presidential primaries.
Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Wontumi, and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC) have come under fire for recent remarks that the NPP has officially distanced itself from.
According to reports, Wontumi allegedly claimed that the decision to schedule the presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, was strategically designed to favor a specific aspirant. Meanwhile, Abronye DC is said to have stated that he compiles the Bono Regional album and would prevent certain individuals from voting.
Wontumi has since clarified his position, explaining that his comments during grassroots engagement sessions were merely reflecting feedback from party supporters about strategies for the NPP's political comeback.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong's campaign team, delivered a scathing condemnation of both chairmen's statements.
"We're calling for a disciplinary process… if you are found culpable, the organ of the party that is clothed with the power to administer disciplinary procedures will proffer the proper sanctions or punishment to you," Kwarteng stated.
He characterized the remarks as "reckless," "divisive," and in clear violation of the NPP's constitution, arguing that they undermine the party's credibility and electoral integrity.
Kwarteng emphasized that the party's statement distancing itself from the comments is insufficient action.
"Any right-thinking member of our party and extension any right-thinking Ghanaian will find these comments unfortunate, it is divisive and designed to break the party," he said. "The party distancing itself alone is not enough. They should be seen publicly to have condemned those reckless, unfortunate statements."
The campaign spokesperson insisted that both regional chairmen should be summoned to face disciplinary proceedings, describing their conduct as a clear violation of party rules that threatens unity and the credible electoral process.
With the presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, the controversy highlights growing tensions within the NPP as various factions position themselves ahead of the crucial vote. The party leadership now faces pressure to take decisive action to preserve internal cohesion during this critical period.
The NPP has not yet announced whether formal disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the two regional chairmen.
