REGSEC Launches Three-Day Demolition Exercise at Sakumo Ramsar Site

May 5,2026

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in collaboration with the Tema West Municipal Assembly, has commenced a three-day demolition exercise today, Tuesday, May 5, targeting unauthorized structures within the Golf Course section of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.

The operation is part of intensified efforts by authorities to restore natural water flow in the area and mitigate the recurring risk of flooding, particularly with the onset of the rainy season.

Officials indicate that illegal constructions on key waterways have severely blocked drainage systems, worsening flooding in nearby communities. They emphasize that the exercise is not a one-off action but a continuation of ongoing enforcement measures aimed at safeguarding the ecologically sensitive Ramsar site.

Despite several warnings, eviction notices, and previous demolition efforts, encroachment has persisted, necessitating a more firm and coordinated intervention.

The Sakumo Ramsar Site, recognized globally for its ecological significance, continues to face threats from human activities, especially unregulated development. Authorities warn that failure to adhere to planning regulations not only harms the environment but also exposes lives and property to significant flood risks.

Security personnel have been deployed to ensure order throughout the exercise, while affected residents have been urged to cooperate with officials to prevent any confrontations.
