Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphatically rejected plans by the United States Department of Homeland Security to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana, describing media reports suggesting otherwise as misleading.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, Minister Ablakwa stated that Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia and that he cannot be deported to Ghana, emphasizing that this position has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities.
"Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia. He cannot be deported to Ghana. This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities," the Foreign Minister wrote.
Minister Ablakwa explained that in his interactions with US officials, he made clear that Ghana's understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded.
"In my interactions with US officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles would not be expanded," he stated.
The Foreign Minister strongly objected to what he termed "misleading media reports" about the matter.
The Department of Homeland Security recently announced plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana, according to a notice from the agency to his attorneys. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man living in the United States, was illegally deported on March 15, 2025, by the US government under the Trump administration in what officials called "an administrative error".
The case has drawn significant international attention due to the controversial circumstances surrounding his initial deportation and subsequent legal battles in US courts.
Ghana's firm rejection of the deportation plan underscores the country's sovereign right to determine who enters its territory and reflects the government's careful approach to immigration matters involving nationals from other countries.
