Ghana to Host Global Conference on Reparatory Justice Following UN Resolution

May 4,2026

Ghana will host a high-level international conference on reparatory justice in June 2026, following a landmark resolution by the United Nations that recognises the trans-Atlantic slave trade as a grave crime against humanity.

The conference, scheduled for June 17 to 19 in Accra, will be held under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations.

The event comes after the UN General Assembly resolution received support from 123 member states, marking a significant step toward global acknowledgment of historical injustices and the need for structured engagement on reparations.

Organisers say the meeting titled the “High-Level Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice”, will bring together global leaders, policymakers, academics, legal experts, and civil society representatives to discuss practical ways of implementing the resolution.

Key discussions will focus on developing coordinated policies, institutional frameworks, and long-term mechanisms to advance reparatory justice at the international level.

As part of the programme, a commemoration of Juneteenth will take place on June 19 at Christiansborg Castle, a historic site associated with the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The event is expected to attract participants from Africa and the diaspora, particularly from the United States.

The conference is also expected to strengthen Africa’s collective position on reparations and enhance collaboration with international partners and diaspora communities.
