Mahama Urges Global Unity After UN Backs Ghana’s Reparations Resolution

March 27,2026

President John Mahama has hailed the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of Ghana’s reparations resolution as a major milestone in the global pursuit of justice for victims of slavery and their descendants.

The resolution, approved on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, calls on member states to engage in structured dialogue and take concrete steps to address the lasting social, economic, and cultural impacts of the transatlantic slave trade.

The motion received overwhelming support, with 123 countries voting in favour, while the United States, Argentina, and Israel opposed it, and 52 nations abstained.

In a social media response on Thursday, March 26, President Mahama welcomed the decision, noting that the resolution formally acknowledges the enslavement and trafficking of Africans as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

He attributed the success to strong international cooperation, highlighting the contributions of the African Union and CARICOM in pushing the initiative from proposal to adoption.

Emphasising its moral and symbolic importance, Mahama described the resolution as a significant step toward honouring the millions affected by slavery. Citing Toussaint Louverture, he urged continued global solidarity, stressing that unity remains essential in restoring dignity and justice to those impacted by historical injustices.
