Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has paid a working visit to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition as part of efforts to strengthen coordination between the Presidency and key government ministries.
During the visit, the Vice President was briefed on the condition of the energy sector inherited by the current administration, which was marked by persistent power outages in 2024, inadequate fuel supply for electricity generation, low investor confidence in the upstream petroleum sector, dwindling fuel reserves, and operational challenges with the cash waterfall mechanism.
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition outlined several reforms and achievements recorded since the change in administration, noting that Ghana has experienced over 10 consecutive months without load shedding. He also disclosed that more than GH¢15 billion has been disbursed through the cash waterfall mechanism, helping to stabilise payments across the power sector value chain.
According to the Ministry, improvements have also been recorded in gas supply, alongside the settlement of significant legacy debts owed to power sector stakeholders. Ongoing reforms at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) were highlighted as part of measures to enhance efficiency and reduce losses.
The briefing further indicated that investor confidence in the energy sector has improved, leading to the restoration of a US$500 million Partial Risk Guarantee, which had previously been depleted. The guarantee is expected to strengthen financial security for power sector investments.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang commended the Ministry for the progress made and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sector-wide reforms, infrastructure expansion, and the delivery of reliable and affordable electricity to support Ghana’s socio-economic development.
The visit forms part of the Vice President’s broader engagement with ministries to assess performance, address challenges, and align government priorities.
