MASLOC Pursues Loan Defaulters: Minority Leader Afenyo Markins Owes GH¢500,000

October 20, 2025

The Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) has intensified efforts to recover outstanding loans from defaulters, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markins among those identified as owing the state-backed lending institution.

According to MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Abigail Akwambea Elorm Mensah, Afenyo Markins's name appeared on the institution's defaulters list with an outstanding debt of GH¢500,000.

Revelation Through Due Diligence Process

The disclosure was made during MASLOC's ongoing due diligence exercise aimed at identifying loan defaulters and determining the total outstanding balances owed to the institution.

"His name appeared on the defaulting list. This was revealed in the due diligence process as part of ascertaining the defaulting status of borrowers and to know total defaulting balances," Ms. Akwambea Elorm Mensah stated.

The CEO's announcement comes as part of a broader institutional effort to clean up MASLOC's loan portfolio and recover funds that are critical to sustaining its microfinance operations and supporting small-scale entrepreneurs across Ghana.

MASLOC's Recovery Drive

MASLOC, established to provide accessible credit to micro and small enterprises, has faced challenges with loan recovery over the years, affecting its capacity to extend new financing to deserving beneficiaries.

The current management has prioritized transparency and accountability in identifying and pursuing defaulters, regardless of their social or political status, to ensure the institution remains financially viable and capable of fulfilling its mandate.

The recovery exercise is expected to involve both high-profile and ordinary borrowers who have failed to meet their repayment obligations.

The revelation that the Minority Leader, who represents Effutu constituency in the Central Region, is among the defaulters could spark political debate, particularly as Parliament continues to scrutinize government expenditure and financial accountability.

As of press time, Afenyo Markins has not publicly responded to the allegations or provided clarification regarding the outstanding loan.

MASLOC's Mandate

MASLOC was established to reduce poverty through the provision of microfinance services to support micro and small-scale enterprises, particularly those owned by women and vulnerable groups in both urban and rural areas.

The institution offers various loan products designed to promote entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic empowerment at the grassroots level.

The success of its loan recovery efforts will be crucial in determining MASLOC's ability to continue supporting small businesses and contributing to Ghana's economic development objectives.
