13 Metro Mass Buses Declared Unserviceable and Sold Ahead of 2020 Elections As Low As Ghs 2500 – Deputy MD

January 19, 2026

The Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), Haroun Apaw Wiredu, has disclosed that 313 buses were declared unserviceable and sold in October 2020, barely two months before Ghana’s general elections, under what he described as a criminally engineered system within the company.

Speaking in an interview on to the media and observed by vistanewsgh.com on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Mr Wiredu alleged that the buses were sold at grossly undervalued prices to individuals he described as cronies of the then management.

According to him, a review of internal records revealed that one fully functional Metro Mass bus was sold for as little as GHS 2,500, raising serious concerns about asset mismanagement and possible corruption.

Mr Wiredu explained that the former management operated a practice known internally as “cannibalisation,” where buses with minor faults were deliberately stripped of usable parts until they could be declared unserviceable and sold as scrap.

“They deliberately removed parts from buses until they reached a point where they could be classified as unserviceable, after which they were sold cheaply to selected individuals,” he stated.

He further revealed that the October 2020 sale was not an isolated incident, noting that over 400 buses were similarly declared unserviceable and sold between 2017 and 2018, shortly after the previous government assumed office.

“By the time we reviewed the records, it was clear that more than 400 buses had been scrapped and sold to people connected to the system. Then, just two months to the 2020 elections, another 313 buses were sold off,” he said.

Mr Wiredu described the practice as a deliberate scheme to exploit the scrapping of buses as a “low-hanging fruit” for personal gain at the expense of the state-owned transport company.

He disclosed that upon assuming office in March 2025, the current management commissioned external auditors to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

“We engaged independent external auditors to look into this issue thoroughly, and they submitted a draft report to us last week for consideration,” he added.

The findings of the audit are expected to inform further action as management seeks to restore accountability and rebuild public confidence in Metro Mass Transit Limited.
