October 14, 2025

President John Dramani Mahama has engaged in high-level bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, marking a significant milestone in Ghana-China relations as both nations celebrate 65 years of diplomatic ties.

The meeting took place during President Mahama's visit to participate in the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, providing an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the future trajectory of cooperation between their countries.

China Commits to Deepening Partnership

President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Ghana, emphasizing the need for both nations to work collaboratively toward mutual prosperity and development.

"China is ready to work with Ghana to promote the upgrading of cooperation in various fields and make greater contributions to building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era," President Xi stated.

The Chinese leader outlined several priority areas for enhanced cooperation, including mining, energy, infrastructure development, agriculture, and fisheries. He stressed the importance of implementing outcomes from the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Zero-Tariff Policy on the Horizon

In a significant announcement, President Xi expressed China's support for helping Ghana transform its natural resource wealth into sustainable economic development. He also expressed hope that Ghana would soon benefit from China's zero-tariff policy extended to African countries—a move that could significantly boost Ghana's export competitiveness in the Chinese market.

Mahama Reaffirms Strategic Ties

President Mahama congratulated China on successfully hosting the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, describing the event as "of great significance" and commending China's leadership in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment on the global stage.

The Ghanaian leader reaffirmed Ghana's unwavering commitment to the One-China policy and expressed optimism about expanding cooperation across key economic sectors.

President Mahama also emphasized Ghana's dedication to multilateralism and reform of global governance structures, pledging support for international initiatives that promote fairness and justice in global affairs.

A Partnership Built on 65 Years of Friendship

The bilateral meeting comes at a pivotal moment as Ghana and China mark 65 years of diplomatic relations. Over the decades, China has become one of Ghana's most important development partners, supporting numerous infrastructure projects, trade initiatives, and capacity-building programs.

Both leaders expressed confidence that the Ghana-China partnership would become even more dynamic and mutually beneficial in the coming years, building on the strong foundation established over more than six decades of diplomatic engagement.

The discussions in Beijing signal a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, with both nations committed to leveraging their partnership for accelerated development and shared prosperity.
