A construction worker trapped under a collapsed building at Kasoa New Market in the Central Region has been rescued after a two-hour operation by the Ghana National Fire Service.
The worker was pinned beneath debris when the front section of a residential building under renovation collapsed. Fire service personnel worked carefully to remove the rubble while a paramedic team on standby administered pain relief and emergency care to keep the victim stable throughout the rescue.
The worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained a severe leg injury. He was initially taken to Kasoa Polyclinic before being transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for advanced treatment. Two other workers at the site managed to escape without injury.
The building's owner, Ali Charles, had hired three masons to reinforce the structure after noticing cracks. Authorities have cordoned off the affected building and evacuated all occupants as a safety precaution.
Seth Sabah Serwonoo Banini, Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, praised the rescue teams' professionalism. "We are grateful to God and to the team from the Fire Service and the Ambulance Service. They really discharged their duties professionally. A medical team was on standby at the Polyclinic to receive the victim immediately after his rescue," he said.
The Municipal NADMO office and the Works and Engineering Department of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly are expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the collapse.
