The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has announced that it will begin issuing vehicle license plates in the names of individuals starting January 2026 as part of efforts to enhance security and safety on Ghana's roads.
According to a statement released by the DVLA, the new policy means that vehicle numbers in the possession of individuals will belong to those individuals, who will have the responsibility to take off the number plate at the time of change in ownership.
Once implemented, every vehicle owner will see their vehicle numbers as their personal numbers with the additional responsibility of protecting them. When vehicles are transferred from the immediate owner, that owner owes a responsibility to take off the number to allow the new owner to go through the process to secure an assigned number to be fixed on the vehicle.
The DVLA explained that the new system is designed to enable the Authority and security agencies within the transport ecosystem to link a unique vehicle number to an individual. This personalization of vehicle registration is expected to improve accountability and tracking within Ghana's vehicle registration system.
The policy change represents a significant shift from the current system where number plates can be transferred between vehicles and owners with less direct accountability. Under the new arrangement, vehicle owners will have greater personal responsibility for their assigned registration numbers.
The DVLA stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana's vehicle registration system and improve road safety through better tracking and accountability measures.
