The Government of Ghana has officially commenced training for the first cohort of 10,000 young entrepreneurs under its flagship "Adwumawura" programme, marking a significant investment in youth empowerment and economic development.
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang presided over the onboarding and orientation ceremony held at the University of Ghana on Thursday, emphasizing the government's commitment to investing in the nation's most valuable resource – its young people.
The Adwumawura Programme targets youth entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35, offering a comprehensive five-week training initiative. Participants will receive mentorship, advisory support, and capital to develop and sustain their start-ups and grow their businesses.
"We are making a statement that the nation is determined to invest in our young people, who remain our greatest resource," Vice President Opoku-Agyemang declared at the ceremony.
While celebrating the launch, the Vice President urged beneficiaries to approach the opportunity with dedication and resilience. "This opportunity is only the beginning. What will make the difference is commitment, discipline, honesty, and flexibility," she stated, acknowledging that challenges and setbacks are inevitable in business.
She challenged the young entrepreneurs to lead the charge in innovation and transformation, emphasizing that their ability to rise above difficulties and continue innovating will set them apart.
The initiative has received substantial backing from the government, with GH₵100 million allocated in the 2025 budget. Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, announced plans to expand Adwumawura into a nationwide programme.
At the ceremony, Minister Opare Addo launched a training manual designed to guide both trainers and trainees throughout the programme.
Eric Adjei, Chief Executive of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), highlighted the importance of youth creativity and innovation as key drivers of national development.
The orientation ceremony represents a milestone in Ghana's journey towards inclusive economic growth. By empowering 10,000 young entrepreneurs annually, the programme aims to create sustainable businesses, generate employment opportunities, and foster a culture of innovation among Ghana's youth population.
The government's investment in entrepreneurship development signals a strategic approach to addressing youth unemployment while building a robust and diverse economy driven by homegrown businesses and innovative solutions.
