Ghana and Burkina Faso Sign Landmark Border Cooperation Agreements

September 20, 2025

Ghana and Burkina Faso have taken a major step to strengthen cross-border cooperation by validating a series of framework agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for the management of their shared international land boundary.

The three-day meeting, organised by the Ghana Boundary Commission (GhBC), brought together officials and technical experts from both nations to review and finalise the legal instruments for joint border management.

Commissioner-General of the GhBC, Brigadier General Anthony Ntem, stressed that the Ghana–Burkina Faso border should serve as a “bridge” fostering trade, community ties and security.
“Validating these legal texts enhances the trust and cooperation needed to make our border a true zone of collaboration,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Yusif Sulemana highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries, noting that the 583-kilometre border has historically been a place of peaceful interaction.
“This meeting represents our shared commitment to transform that common space into a frontier of cooperation, stability and prosperity,” he added, while commending the technical and financial support of GIZ.

From Burkina Faso, Yvette Nacoula Sanou Massadalo, Governor of the Nazinon Region, emphasized the need for a “relevant, adapted, and pragmatic legal framework” to address complex cross-border challenges and turn joint decisions into tangible actions.

Mamoudou Tapily, GIZ-AUBP West Africa Regional Coordinator, underscored that cross-border collaboration is now “an essential strategy” for preventing conflict, improving governance, and tackling issues like insecurity, climate change, and economic underdevelopment.

The agreements, once implemented, are expected to boost security, expand trade, and strengthen socio-economic ties, turning the Ghana–Burkina Faso border into a model of cooperation and mutual prosperity.
