Ghana to Receive 40 More Deportees from US – Ablakwa

Accra, Sept. 17, 2025

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that Ghana will, in the coming days, receive an additional 40 West African deportees from the United States.

His disclosure follows criticism from the Minority in Parliament, which recently faulted government for accepting 14 deportees earlier this month without what they described as the necessary parliamentary approval.

Government has, however, clarified that the arrangement is covered by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US, which does not require ratification by Parliament.

Speaking on Channel One TV and observed by vistanewsgh.com on Wednesday, September 17, Ablakwa confirmed the imminent arrival of the new batch.

“I can reveal to you that we’re expecting another 40 in the next few days. We vet them before they come,” he stated.

The Minister emphasised that the decision was made purely on humanitarian grounds, stressing that Ghana acted after witnessing the inhumane treatment of deportees abroad.

“We didn’t agree to this because we support President Trump’s immigration policies. We’re not doing the US a favour. We’re doing our fellow Africans a favour; we’re offering them refuge, hope, and comfort.

We solidarised with them when we saw those images the arrests, the violations of their rights, and their being detained against their will. It was purely on a humanitarian basis; we did not take any financial benefits,” Ablakwa explained.
