Interior Minister Renews Bawku Curfew on National Security Advice

September 17, 2025

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has renewed the curfew in the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region following advice from the National Security Council.

The renewed curfew will run from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily, effective Monday, September 15, 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents of the area to remain calm and resolve differences through non-violent means.

The Ministry also reminded the public of a ban on the possession of arms and offensive weapons within the municipality. Anyone found flouting the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.

The curfew comes in the wake of renewed unrest, including the killing of two Nalerigu SHS students on July 27, 2025, by unidentified gunmen. The attack prompted the government to evacuate students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding conflict areas for their safety.

Government earlier deployed the Ghana Armed Forces to enforce law and order in the area, shifting its role from peacekeeping to peace enforcement due to the escalation of the conflict.

Officials say the curfew is part of broader efforts to restore peace and protect lives and property in the conflict-affected municipality.
