EPA to Begin Nationwide Compliance Enforcement Exercises Under New Environmental Act.

Accra, September 15, 2025

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of Ghana has announced that it will begin nationwide compliance enforcement exercises to ensure strict adherence to the newly enacted Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124) and related regulations.

According to a public notice issued by the EPA, the enforcement drive will cover a wide range of entities, including hospitality and tourism facilities, industrial and manufacturing plants, healthcare institutions, mining and quarrying operations, construction projects, waste management operators, petroleum downstream operations, and other undertakings required to hold environmental permits.

The EPA stated that the compliance exercises will focus on verifying the validity of Environmental Permits and Licenses, monitoring adherence to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), enforcing proper waste management practices, ensuring the payment of mandated environmental fees, and preventing pollution and other environmental hazards.

“All entities are reminded to ensure their Environmental Permits and approvals are valid and that they operate in full compliance with the conditions,” the notice stressed. It added that failure to comply will attract sanctions under Act 1124, including administrative charges, suspension of operations, revocation of permits, and possible prosecution.

The EPA also called for public cooperation, urging citizens to provide information on suspected cases of environmental non-compliance through its hotlines, email, and offices nationwide.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s environment for present and future generations, emphasizing that the enforcement exercise aligns with its mandate to promote sustainable development and protect the country’s natural and built environment.
