Ghana’s leading climate scientist and Chief Executive Officer of Environmental Protection Authority, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, represented the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) at the prestigious Harvard Climate Symposium, joining a high-level panel on “Rising Seas, Resilient Communities- Climate Adaptation Strategies in West Africa.”

Professor Klutse shared the stage with Prof. Emmanuel Akyeampong, Dr. Georges Kouame Kouadio, and Dr. Tokunbo Wahab, highlighting the urgent need for science-based policies and regional collaboration to confront the mounting threats of rising sea levels and coastal erosion.

“This conversation was not just about adaptation,” Prof. Klutse noted. “It was about justice, equity, and ensuring African voices lead in crafting solutions that fit our realities. Our responses must be rooted in both science and the lived experiences of communities on the frontlines.”

The event, hosted by Harvard University’s Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability in partnership with the Climate Action Accelerator, underscored the importance of African leadership in global climate negotiations and the need to prioritize vulnerable communities in adaptation strategies.

Delegates at the symposium agreed that integrating local knowledge with cutting-edge science is essential to build climate-resilient societies across West Africa and beyond.
