Nungua Residents Turn to Seawater Amid Month-Long Shortage
September 27, 2025
Residents of Nungua are appealing for urgent government intervention after enduring more than a month without access to potable water, forcing many households to resort to seawater for basic chores.
The taps in the area have remained dry for weeks, while commercial water tankers are either unavailable or charging fees residents say they cannot afford.
Mrs. Agnes Nuga, a trader, told Citi News the situation has left her family struggling to cope even putting her husband, a tanker driver, out of work.
“Water scarcity has become a very big issue for us. We have even decided to go on a demonstration. We are really struggling. We are calling on the government to come to our aid. My husband is a water tanker driver, and he has no water to supply,” she lamented.
She added that many residents are reluctant to use seawater over hygiene concerns.
Food vendors have also been hit hard. a woman, who runs a local eatery, said the shortage has brought her business to a halt.
“I sell food, and without water, it has become difficult. The last resort is the sea for water. I don’t cook when there is no water because I can’t use seawater, which is not hygienic,” she explained.
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has in recent months cited frequent power supply challenges, broken-down equipment, and ongoing maintenance works at the Kpong and Weija treatment plants as reasons for supply disruptions in parts of Accra, including Nungua. However, residents say the situation has persisted far too long without a clear timetable for resolution.
Community leaders are now threatening to stage a public demonstration if the crisis continues, stressing that access to safe drinking water is a basic right.
