The Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) has intercepted gold valued at GHS 10.2 million at Winneba Junction in the Central Region.
At a press conference, GOLDBOD Chief Executive Officer Mr. Sammy Gyamfi said the operation followed an intelligence tip-off about a syndicate transporting gold from Tarkwa. One suspect was apprehended at the scene, and the consignment was later confirmed to be worth GHS 10.2 million.
The syndicate, operating under the name NK Benak Enterprise, has had its license revoked. Preliminary investigations revealed that within the past two months, the group had smuggled about 100 kilograms of gold, valued at GHS 120 million.
Those identified as part of the syndicate include Mr. Bernard Nkrumah, CEO of NK Benak Enterprise, and two others who are currently in custody but have been granted bail of GHS 50 million. Four others remain at large: Afsal Puttalan and Mohammed N. Rafeeq (both Indian nationals), along with Sadique Abubakari and Abdul Karim, who are Ghanaians.
In addition, GOLDBOD has also revoked the license of Rafmoh Gold and Jewelleries, citing links to the illegal operations.
Mr. Gyamfi announced a GHS 1 million bounty on each fugitive, urging the public to volunteer credible information to aid their arrest.
“The fight against gold smuggling is key to protecting Ghana’s natural resources. We will continue to work with security agencies to dismantle these illegal networks,” he said.
