Ghana's leadership held crucial bilateral discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Monday, marking a significant step toward strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
During the meeting at the State Council, Ghana's representative expressed appreciation for China's ongoing investment, grants, and substantial support for Ghana's economic growth and infrastructure development. The discussions centered on establishing a new framework to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries.
A key highlight of the talks was China's expressed interest in supporting Ghana's ambitious 24-hour economy initiative. The cooperation would focus specifically on agricultural development, with emphasis on agro-processing and value addition—sectors critical to Ghana's economic transformation agenda.
The meeting also addressed pressing concerns surrounding illegal activities in Ghana's small-scale mining sector, commonly known as "galamsey." Premier Li Qiang committed China's cooperation in implementing preventive policies and regulatory frameworks to combat the environmental and economic challenges posed by illegal mining operations.
Positioning Ghana as "the gateway to Africa," the Ghanaian delegation extended an invitation for increased Chinese tourism and investment in the West African nation. Both parties expressed optimism about enhanced diplomatic relations, trade, and investment cooperation going forward.
The bilateral meeting, described as fruitful and productive, signals a new chapter in Ghana-China relations with concrete commitments across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
