NPP Has No Leadership, Paul Afoko

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awuntawin Awuni Afoko, has broken his silence on the state of the party, accusing its current leadership of lacking focus and weakening its once vibrant image.

In an interview with Accra-based UTV, the businessman and politician recalled his removal from office in 2016, describing it as the handiwork of a “selfish few” who placed personal interests above the collective good of the party. “It was painful,” he admitted, adding that he only let go after former President John Agyekum Kufuor advised him to do so.

Touching on his relationship with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mr Afoko said he had met him only twice in nine years. “He once told me on a plane that he was travelling to London and would arrange a meeting when he returned. But for now, I am focused on myself,” he remarked.

Mr Afoko lamented that the NPP, which once attracted intellectuals and professionals, is no longer appealing. In contrast, he argued, the opposition NDC has rebranded itself and now looks more attractive than during the Rawlings era.

He also disclosed that his personal businesses collapsed because of his own party, making it impossible for him to continue funding its activities. “My businesses were destroyed, so how could I raise money to support the party? A few MPs I helped sent me messages of thanks, but that was all,” he said.

On whether he intends to return to active politics, Mr Afoko revealed that he has been approached by several groups urging him to contest for leadership. However, he said he is still weighing his options carefully before making a decision.
