A fire outbreak at the Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour in Sekondi on Sunday evening destroyed a premix fuel station and caused significant damage to property following a suspected weather-related incident.

According to eyewitnesses, heavy rainfall in the area triggered a minor landslide that caused an electricity pole to collapse onto the premix fuel storage facility, sparking the fire.

The blaze quickly spread through the facility, destroying the fuel station and damaging two vehicles. Portions of the station's offices and ice storage rooms were also gutted by the fire.

Residents and workers at the harbour reportedly rushed to safety as firefighters battled the flames to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures and fishing-related facilities.

Speaking to Citi News after the situation had been brought under control, DO3 Emmanuel Bonney of the Western Regional Fire Command confirmed that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service successfully extinguished the fire shortly before 8:00 p.m.

He said no casualties had been reported and indicated that investigations had commenced to establish the exact cause of the incident.

"The fire has been brought under control, and we have begun investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the outbreak," he stated.

The incident has raised concerns among fishermen and harbour users, many of whom depend on the premix fuel station for their daily operations.

Authorities are expected to conduct a full assessment of the damage while efforts are made to restore normal activities at the fishing harbour.

The Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour is one of the key fishing hubs in the Western Region, serving hundreds of fisherfolk and fish traders.
