EPA Ghana Partners Columbia University to Strengthen Air Quality Monitoring Nationwide

June 1,2026

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ghana has entered into a strategic partnership with Columbia University to enhance air quality monitoring across the country through the use of advanced satellite technology and artificial intelligence.

The collaboration will leverage the Gridded Africa Surface Pollution (GRASP) dataset, an innovative air pollution monitoring system that combines satellite observations and machine learning techniques to track fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels across Africa.

The partnership is expected to significantly improve Ghana’s ability to monitor air quality, particularly in communities and regions where ground-based air quality monitoring stations are not available. By providing comprehensive nationwide coverage, the GRASP dataset will generate more complete and reliable information on air pollution trends across the country.

According to the EPA, the initiative will support evidence-based environmental policymaking by providing robust scientific data to guide interventions aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health. The system will also help establish a national record of Ghana’s environmental progress, enabling authorities to track changes in pollution levels over time and evaluate the effectiveness of environmental policies and programmes.

The collaboration is being formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the EPA Ghana and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a globally recognised research institution known for its expertise in earth and environmental sciences.

The EPA noted that the partnership reflects its commitment to embracing science, technology, and innovation in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

Officials believe the initiative will strengthen Ghana’s environmental governance framework and contribute to the development of cleaner air policies that safeguard the health and well-being of citizens.

The partnership marks another important step in EPA Ghana’s efforts to harness cutting-edge scientific tools and data-driven solutions to support a healthier and more sustainable future for the country.
