Leadership by Example: EPA Directs Staff to Stop Using Styrofoam Products Ahead of Nationwide Ban

May 28,2026

Management of the Environmental Protection Authority has directed all staff to immediately stop the use of polystyrene foam products, popularly known as Styrofoam or takeaway packs, within its offices as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.

The directive was contained in an internal memorandum issued by the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, on May 26, 2026.

According to the memo, the decision follows the recent national announcement on the ban of polystyrene foam products, which is expected to take effect from January 1, 2027. Management urged staff members to “lead by example” by refraining from the use of Styrofoam products and embracing environmentally friendly alternatives.

The memo further indicated that the directive takes immediate effect and forms part of broader efforts by the Authority to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

Staff of the Authority have therefore been encouraged to support and comply fully with the initiative as Ghana intensifies measures aimed at reducing plastic pollution and improving environmental sanitation across the country.

The move has been widely viewed as a practical demonstration of institutional commitment by the EPA to champion environmental responsibility ahead of the nationwide enforcement of the Styrofoam ban.
