Government Bans Raw Rubber Export for 10 Years

May 15, 2023

The Government of Ghana has announced an immediate ban on the export of raw rubber as part of efforts to promote local industrialisation and value addition within the country’s agricultural sector.

The directive, issued by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, will remain in force for the next 10 years. The move is aimed at boosting local processing of rubber, creating jobs, and strengthening Ghana’s manufacturing industry.

According to the ministry, the policy forms part of broader government measures to accelerate industrial growth and reduce the export of raw materials without value addition. Officials believe the ban will encourage investment in local rubber processing factories and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in the global market.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that it could help increase domestic production capacity and generate employment opportunities, particularly for young people in rubber-producing communities.

Meanwhile, government has assured investors and local producers of support measures to ensure smooth implementation of the policy and maximize benefits for the economy.

The announcement has sparked discussions among exporters and manufacturers on the long-term impact of the policy on Ghana’s trade and industrial transformation agenda.
