Police Kill Two Armed Robbery Suspects in Shootout on Obuasi–Dunkwa Highway

March 13,2026

The Ghana Police Service has shot and killed two suspected armed robbers during a gun battle on the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway in the Ashanti Region following an intelligence-led operation.

According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, the operation took place on March 10 and 11, 2026, after security officials received credible intelligence that a group of armed men had assembled in a bush along the highway to carry out a robbery.

Police officers deployed to the area reportedly encountered four armed suspects. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers in an attempt to escape, leading to a shootout. Two of the suspects were fatally wounded, while the remaining two managed to flee the scene.

The deceased suspects were identified as David Aheto, 42, from Sogakope and resident in Asin Fosu, and Illiasu Bawa, 32, from Banda Nkwanta in the Savannah Region. Both were pronounced dead on arrival at Bekwai Municipal Hospital.

Police recovered several weapons from the scene, including an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 28 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun with five BB cartridges, eight additional rounds of ammunition, and a spent cartridge.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were linked to several robberies in towns such as Obuasi, Dunkwa, Wasa Akropong, and Asin Fosu.

Further intelligence led police to uncover a suspected illegal arms supply network operating in Asawase in Kumasi. Authorities allege that a suspect, Alhaji Abdalah, sold the recovered AK-47 rifle to the gang for GH₵45,000 and had also supplied other weapons to members of the group.

A follow-up operation on March 11 led to the arrest of Aminu Iddrisu, also known as 0244, who reportedly led officers to another hidden AK-47 rifle and a Bruni pistol concealed in a sheep pen at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi.

Another suspect, Daniel Debrah, 24, was also arrested, with police discovering a red Toyota Corolla believed to have been acquired through the gang’s robbery activities.

Police say suspects Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman alias Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu alias 0244, and Daniel Debrah are currently in custody assisting with investigations. Authorities are continuing efforts to arrest other suspects, including Mallam Aminu, who remains at large.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating armed robbery and illegal firearms trafficking, warning that anyone involved will face the full force of the law.
