The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully averted a potential fire or explosion following a fuel tanker accident at Nsawam Okanta on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The incident involved a DAF XF diesel tanker with registration number GC 1084-11, which fell on the highway, spilling diesel and creating a high risk of fire. Firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station responded swiftly to the scene.
According to the GNFS, personnel immediately applied foam and water to cool the tanker, control the diesel spillage, and secure the area, preventing possible casualties and extensive damage to lives and property.
The Ghana Police Service assisted by securing the scene and preventing members of the public from siphoning fuel, while a recovery team worked to safely overturn and tow the tanker to a secure location to restore safety on the highway.
The GNFS has reiterated a strong warning to the public against fuel siphoning, describing the practice as illegal and extremely dangerous, with the potential to cause fires, explosions, and loss of life.
Residents and motorists have been urged to keep away from accident scenes and allow emergency responders to manage such situations professionally.
The incident report was filed by the Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Eastern Region, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
