Frustrated residents of Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities took to the streets on Tuesday, October 14, demanding immediate government intervention to address the deteriorating condition of the Somanya–Odumase–Kpong road.
The demonstrators, organized by a coalition of Krobo civic groups, presented a petition to President John Dramani Mahama through the Municipal Assemblies of both Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo, giving authorities a 60-day deadline to act.
The 24-kilometre stretch has become what residents describe as a "daily affliction." Reconstruction work that began in 2016 was halted following the 2017 change of government. The project was re-awarded in 2024, only to be abandoned again after the 2025 governmental transition.
Protesters highlighted the severe toll the road's condition has taken on their communities:
Health Impact: Rising cases of respiratory diseases attributed to excessive dust from the unpaved sections
Economic Burden: Skyrocketing vehicle maintenance costs forcing drivers to spend more on repairs than earnings
Business Collapse: Small businesses struggling to survive due to poor accessibility and reduced customer traffic
Safety Concerns: Deep potholes and hazardous driving conditions creating daily risks for commuters
The abandoned road has disrupted normal life across the Krobo area, affecting transportation networks, healthcare access, and commercial activities. Residents report that what should be routine journeys have become dreaded ordeals marked by dust clouds, vehicle damage, and extended travel times.
The coalition emphasized that the persistent neglect of the road infrastructure has created a humanitarian situation that demands urgent presidential attention and action.
As the 60-day countdown begins, all eyes are now on the Mahama administration to respond to the residents' plea for relief from what has become years of infrastructural abandonment.
