Royal Family Recognizes Odo Broni as Legitimate Spouse, Says Marriage to Akosua Serwaa Ended Years Ago
The family of late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has issued a strong response to claims by his first wife, Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, that she is the musician's only surviving spouse.
Family's Position on Marriage Status
In a statement released through Baba Jamal & Associates, lawyers for the Fosuh Royal Family of Parkoso and Nsuta, the family maintained that Serwaa Fosuh's marriage to the late musician ended years ago under Akan customary law. They asserted she has no authority to determine how his burial or funeral should be conducted.
The family's lawyers explained that by Akan tradition, Serwaa Fosuh presented traditional drinks to the family to acknowledge the dissolution of her marriage, which was accepted and confirmed by Daddy Lumba himself, making the separation final under customary practice.
Pointed Message on Funeral Recognition
In a particularly pointed statement, the family declared: "If your client's [Akosua Serwaa] name appears in the funeral brochure, it will only be a favour from us and not an acknowledgment of her as a wife of the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu."
Recognition of Odo Broni as Legitimate Wife
The letter, dated October 1, 2025, asserted that Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, is recognized as the legitimate wife of the late musician, having lived with him for over 15 years and sharing six children together.
Allegations of Abandonment
The family accused Serwaa Fosuh of abandoning Daddy Lumba during his years of illness and showing little interest in his welfare. They revealed that she had written to him in 2018 to initiate divorce proceedings, confirming her intent to end the marriage.
Family's Authority Over Funeral Arrangements
The lawyers emphasized that the family alone reserves the right to make decisions concerning Daddy Lumba's funeral and estate. They revealed holding written instructions from the musician detailing how his funeral and estate distribution should be managed.
"Your client has no right to determine how the Fosu Royal Family buries their dead. The funeral will proceed according to custom and the wishes of the late musician," the letter stated.
Appeal for Unity
The statement concluded with an appeal for calm and unity, urging Serwaa Fosuh and her lawyers to avoid "unproductive litigation" and allow the family to organize a dignified and peaceful funeral for the late highlife legend.
Legal Battle
This response follows a lawsuit filed by Akosua Serwaa Fosuh at the Kumasi High Court, where she is seeking a declaration that she is the only surviving spouse of Daddy Lumba and the person entitled to perform his widowhood rites.
The dispute highlights the complexities that can arise when traditional customary marriage practices intersect with modern legal proceedings, particularly in high-profile cases involving beloved public figures like the late highlife icon.
