Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has pledged that the long-delayed La General Hospital redevelopment project will be completed within two years, following his first site visit since assuming office.
During a familiarization tour on Thursday, the minister announced that the government has allocated GH₵130 million in the 2025 budget specifically for the project, signaling renewed commitment to the controversial healthcare facility.
The La General Hospital redevelopment has become a source of frustration for residents of La and surrounding areas, who have struggled to access adequate healthcare since the old structure was demolished in 2020. Multiple broken promises over the years had left the community uncertain about whether the facility would ever be completed.
The recent change in government had initially raised concerns among residents that the project might be abandoned entirely.
Minister Akandoh, accompanied by La Dade Kotopon MP Rita Odoley Sowah and the Municipal Chief Executive, received a briefing from contractors before touring the construction site.
The minister revealed that of the 50 million euros required for the project, approximately 12 million euros have already been paid. He confirmed that the second Request for Payment Certificate (RPC) has been raised and that Finance Minister has assured his commitment to releasing the necessary funds.
"As the sector minister, it is my responsibility to ensure the project is completed. And all things being equal, we are looking at it being completed in two years' time," Akandoh stated.
Following the minister's assurances, the project contractor indicated that construction work would resume fully within the next few weeks, once funds are received and necessary materials are procured.
MP Rita Odoley Sowah used the occasion to reassure her constituents, stating: "I want to let my people know that the Mahama government will not relent on its promise to them. The project will be completed for them."
The announcement has been met with cautious optimism by residents, who hope this marks a turning point in the long-stalled healthcare project that has been years in the making.
