Three Killed, 20 Hospitalised After Building Collapse in Accra New Town

March 30,2026

Three people have lost their lives while 20 others are receiving treatment following the collapse of a three-storey building in Accra New Town, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed.

The structure, which was under construction, collapsed on Sunday within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School. The site is also known to host Christian worship activities.

Earlier reports had put the death toll at two, but authorities have since updated the figure to three after conducting detailed checks across hospitals and emergency units.

Rescue teams worked overnight using floodlights to search for victims trapped beneath the rubble. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service were all deployed to assist in the operation.

According to the Minister, a total of 23 individuals were affected by the collapse. Of these, 20 survivors are currently being treated at facilities including the Police Hospital, Mamobi Polyclinic, and a private hospital.

He further disclosed that the victims include 15 females and eight males, among them seven minors. However, none of the deceased are children.

Authorities say some trapped individuals were earlier heard calling for help, raising fears that additional victims could still be under the debris.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown as investigations continue alongside ongoing rescue efforts.
