Fuel Prices Go Up by 6%, Drivers Push for Fare Increase

September 16, 2025

Fuel prices at the pumps have gone up by 6 percent, sparking renewed calls from transport operators for an upward adjustment in transport fares.

The increase, according to industry watchers, is driven largely by the marginal depreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies on the international market. The price hike has already begun reflecting at various fuel stations nationwide.

In response, driver unions say the new adjustment will significantly affect their operational costs, leaving them with little choice but to pass part of the burden on to passengers.

“We cannot continue to absorb these increases while maintaining the same fares. Fuel is our main cost component, and once prices go up, it directly impacts our livelihood,” a spokesperson for one of the major unions told reporters.

The unions have indicated they will soon present a formal proposal to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport associations for approval before engaging the Ministry of Transport on possible fare increments.

Meanwhile, commuters have expressed concern over the looming fare hikes, with many arguing that rising costs of transportation will further worsen the cost-of-living crisis.

Industry experts warn that if the cedi continues to depreciate, fuel prices may experience further upward adjustments in the coming weeks, intensifying pressure on both drivers and passengers.
