U.S. Intervenes in South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ

March 14,2026

The United States has formally intervened in the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Washington argues that the allegations of genocide are unfounded and part of what it described as a broader campaign targeting Israel and the Jewish people.

The case before the ICJ centers on whether Israel’s military operations in Gaza launched after the October 7 attacks led by Hamas in 2023 constitute genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Israel has strongly rejected the accusations, insisting that its military actions are aimed at dismantling Hamas while taking measures to reduce harm to civilians. Israeli officials have also accused Hamas of operating within civilian areas and using civilians as human shields.

According to a legal filing obtained by the Associated Press, the United States warned that a ruling against Israel could have broader implications for international law, arguing it might weaken the legal threshold required to prove genocidal intent.

Legal experts say the case could take several years before the ICJ reaches a final judgment, as the court continues to review evidence and legal arguments from all parties involved.
