Vice President Condemns Sexual Misconduct in SHSs, Warns Transfers Not Enough Punishment

 October 6,2025

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has strongly condemned the growing incidents of inappropriate sexual relationships between teachers and students in second-cycle institutions, warning that transferring offending teachers should not be used as punishment.

Her comments come following a viral video allegedly involving a headmaster of KNUST Senior High School and a female student in a compromising situation. Another video reportedly shows a male teacher engaged in sexual activity with a female student at Okadjakrom Senior High School.

Speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize Ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described these acts as disgraceful to the noble profession of teaching.

She emphasized that while the government will not hesitate to punish individuals who violate the trust placed in them by students, transferring offending teachers should not be the approach. "Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils. The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point. As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy," she said.

"The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not wait to apply sanctions to those who violate that trust. Remember, transfers are not punishment and so they should never be used against those who abuse our children, betray their trust, and those who disgrace our profession."

The Vice President announced plans to revive Parent-Teacher Associations to promote greater involvement of parents and guardians in the education and protection of young learners. She stated that the government will also prioritize collaboration with the National Teaching Council to raise the standard of teaching across the country.

"The government has also decided to revive PTAs to encourage broader participation in forming our young learners," she added.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang concluded by encouraging teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as essential elements of their professional development.

The remarks come as the Ghana Education Service intensifies its response to sexual misconduct in schools, with the KNUST SHS assistant headmaster already removed from office pending investigations into the viral video allegations.
